Who is the Great Moulay Abdus Salām Ibn Mashīsh (Q)?

Birth

Moulay Abdus Salam ibn Mashish (also spelled Abdeslam Ben Mshish) was born around 1140 CE (535 AH) in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. His exact birth date is not well-documented, as much of his life is preserved through oral tradition and historical accounts rather than contemporaneous records.

He is best known as a revered Moroccan Sufi saint and the spiritual teacher of Sheikh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili (Q), the founder of the Shadhili Sufi order. His shrine, located on Jabal al-Alam near Tetouan, remains a significant site of pilgrimage for people worldwide, all year round.

Lineage

Moulay Abdus Salam ibn Mashīsh is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) through his Grandson Hasan ibn Ali (Radi-Allah Anhu). His lineage made him part of the respected Idrīsid family, known for their leadership and spirituality in Morocco

From an early age, he displayed remarkable piety and devotion to Islamic learning. He studied the Qur’an, Hadith, and other Islamic sciences, excelling in both religious scholarship and spirituality.
